Starting this May, Google is implementing a new security requirement that could impact your Google account. They will be enforcing 2-factor authentication (2FA) for all Google accounts using their Cloud services, including the Google Maps API for embedded maps on websites.
What Is 2FA and Why Does It Matter?
2FA adds an extra layer of protection to your Google account by requiring a secondary authentication method, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password. This security measure significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.
What Is the Google Maps API?
The Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) allows websites and applications to integrate Google Maps functionalities, such as displaying maps, location searches, and route planning. Many law firms use this API to embed interactive maps on their websites, making it easier for clients to find their offices. If your firm relies on Google Maps for location-based features, this API plays a key role in that functionality.
How Could This Affect You?
If your firm uses the Google Maps API or other Google Cloud services, this change will apply to the associated Google account. While it may introduce minor login inconveniences, most firms rarely need to access these accounts directly—internal teams or service providers often handle that. However, it’s crucial to ensure you have access when needed. If you’re a client, our team takes care of this for you, but we still recommend verifying your access.
What You Need to Do
If you’re a Skunkworks client: At this point, nothing! For those impacted, we’ll be reaching out soon with step-by-step instructions on setting up 2FA to keep your account secure. Skunkworks may need to add a stakeholder cell phone number to the account to ensure you retain access independently of Skunkworks’ assistance. It takes a few minutes for Skunkworks to set this up with the stakeholder’s assistance.
For others, Google has provided a step-by-step guide via their Google Account Help Centre that can walk you through the process.
