Skunkworks is very pleased to congratulate our client, Murray Rankin, QC, on winning a hotly contested by-election to become the new Member of Parliament for Victoria, BC. The by-election was the result of the recent resignation of long-time Victoria MP Denise Savoie, who left federal politics earlier this year due to health concerns.
Rankin – a lawyer and adjunct law professor at the University of Victoria, who has devoted his career to investigating environmental law and aboriginal rights – narrowly defeated Green Party candidate Donald Galloway – a fellow University of Victoria law professor well known and respected for his research on immigration, refugee, and citizenship law. The final tally was 14,519 votes for Rankin and 13,368 votes for Galloway.
Following the result, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair introduced Murray to an enthusiastic crowd that was tightly packed into the Empress Hotel. Murray, an outspoken critic of the Enbridge pipeline, made sure to mention BC’s opposition to the pipeline prominently in his victory speech.
Skunkworks wishes Murray the best of luck as he transitions into his new role. He is sure to be a very capable representative for Victoria, BC.
